We all encounter overwhelming challenges in life, and it can be difficult to find our way through them. I want to share my journey of healing, which began under an old tree on a beach in Five Islands, Nova Scotia. This tree became a symbol of hope during one of the darkest times of my life—a therapist of sorts, despite being so rooted in place.

During my time under this tree, I spent two full tides—about twelve hours—crying. It wasn’t just shade from the sun that I sought; I craved relief from the emotional storm that was my constant companion. I felt invisible to my friends and family, who I thought would support me. Words were often spoken about coming by, but every last-minute cancellation felt like another weight added to my already heavy heart.

The old tree where I found solace and healing.

As I struggled with severe pain in my spine, I turned to various doctors for help. Their well-meaning reassurances echoed hollow, leaving me feeling more lost and unwell. My health deteriorated over weeks; I was losing weight at an alarming rate, around 10% of my body weight due to the stress I was under. Friends who had once promised to stand by me seemed to evaporate, leaving me in deeper isolation.

I would often walk into local businesses only to hear that stylists, doctors, and even my friends had canceled on me. The tipping point was the moment my closest friend let me down; hope felt utterly crushed. However, just when despair swallowed me whole, a stranger appeared. Living across the river, they witnessed my breakdown and offered a simple piece of advice that would prove invaluable. They encouraged me to seek out an osteopath, a move that radically shifted my path to recovery.

Embracing the guidance of the osteopath, I also began incorporating psilocybin therapy and meditation into my routine. This multi-faceted approach unveiled layers of pain and abuse I had held onto for decades. Healing, I soon realized, is not a final destination but rather a winding journey filled with ups and downs. Every person’s path to healing is unique; there's no cookie-cutter approach to recovery.

The most profound lessons emerged from spending time in nature. The rhythmic crashing of waves and the expansive shores filled me with unprecedented ease during my most fragile times. The beach in Five Islands was not just an escape; it became a space of transformation, rekindling my lost sense of hope.

Message I read from a guest under This Old Tree that was my lifeline

As my healing progressed, I committed to sharing my experiences to help others navigating similar struggles. My guiding philosophy became “As above, so below,” highlighting how our inner journeys can reflect our outer experiences. I aim to be a lifeline for those grappling with their emotions, offering support to help them ride the waves of life.

For anyone who feels overwhelmed, do not hesitate to reach out—to trusted friends, healthcare professionals, or even kind strangers who can serve as unexpected allies. It is crucial to take a break from your swirling thoughts and find a serene spot in nature. Grounding yourself in these spaces can make a significant difference.

Embracing this healing journey, I found my voice, and I am here in Five Islands, ready to support others in finding theirs. Whether you stroll the stunning coastline or engage in deep self-reflection, remember that true healing often requires confronting hidden shadows. You are not alone; many of us are navigating the tumultuous waters of our own experiences.

The old tree on the beach in Five Islands is a powerful reminder of both my struggles and my rebirth into a new phase of life. It teaches us that even in our darkest hours, there is always light and help to be found. Healing is deeply personal and often connected to the bonds we form with others. Embrace the unknown and explore what resonates with you.

Take time for yourself. Dive into your experiences, find your metaphorical "old tree," and let it lead you toward hope and healing. Your story is valuable, and it’s waiting to be shared, just as I have shared mine.

I am living proof that it is possible to transform one's life with persistence, support, and the courage to confront buried emotions.

So take that first step. The beach is calling.
